Inspire the Next Generation

“Teachers are the foundation of the education system. There are no great schools without great teachers. The quality of teaching is the single most important in-school factor for improving pupil outcomes — and it is particularly important for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

DfE 2021

Initial Teacher Education sits at the heart of the DfE's educational reforms, which see the biggest changes to training & development for teachers in a generation.

To provide trainees and early career teachers with the best possible start to their career, a new ITT core content framework came into effect from September 2020. The ITT core content framework and the Early Career Framework draw upon the best available evidence to establish an entitlement to a three or more year structured package of support for future generations of teachers. The ITT core content framework defines in detail the minimum entitlement for trainee teachers and places a duty on providers of ITT — and their partner schools — to meet this entitlement. Further information on the ITT core content framework can be found on GOV.UK.

Role of Teaching School Hubs

TS Hubs will deliver ITT in their area, either as school-based training with lead partner or as a SCITT provider or partner school.

Routes into Teaching

There are many routes into our exciting and dynamic profession, from Higher Education Institution (HEI), School Centred Initial Teacher training (SCITT) and School Direct to Assessment Only routes and Teacher Apprenticeships.

SCITTs and School Direct lead schools can offer ITT through the following routes:

Provider-led :

Where a tuition fee is payable to the ITT provider to cover the cost of teaching and training. Training places are held by the ITT provider. Bursaries are available for eligible trainees.

School Direct (fee-funded):

A school partnership works with an ITT provider to which a tuition fee is payable to cover the cost of training. Training places are held by the lead school. Trainees may be eligible for a bursary or scholarship.

School Direct (salaried):

A school partnership works with an ITT provider and the trainee is employed within the school partnership. Training places are held by the lead school for the partnership in which the trainee is employed. Schools could be paid a training grant for qualifying subjects.

Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship:

A school partnership works with an ITT provider that is on the Register of Apprenticeship Training Providers (RoATP) and the apprentice is employed within the school partnership. Training places are held by the lead school on behalf of the partnership in which the apprentice is employed. This is an employment-based route where the trainee is employed for the duration of the course (a minimum of 12 months), which includes an additional apprenticeship end-point assessment following the award of QTS. More information on the Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is available on GOV.UK
